The late Liverpool forward, Diogo Jota, was in good spirits and enjoying a “happy moment” just hours before the car crash that claimed his life and that of his brother, André Silva.

This was revealed by Álvaro Cerqueira, the President of Gondomar SC, who spoke to Jota on the night of the tragic accident. Jota and his brother died early Thursday morning in a fiery crash in northwest Spain after their Lamborghini suffered a tyre blowout and veered off the road.

According to Spanish authorities, the vehicle caught fire with both brothers still inside, leaving no chance of survival.

Speaking to Jornal de Noticias, Cerqueira said, “It was just after 10 p.m. last night, we were on the phone and he was fine. We spoke almost every week and I know he was going through a happy moment.”

The funeral for both brothers is scheduled to take place on Saturday morning in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal.
