The Osun State Police Command has arrested a community leader, Chief Gbenga Ajibade, over an alleged attempt to murder a 25-year-old man, Ebenezer, who was accused of stealing two pieces of maize.

According to police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi, the arrest followed a disturbing incident in the Ireti Ayo area of Ilesa, where Chief Ajibade was reportedly seen in a video forcing the young man to drink a poisonous substance as punishment for theft.

Ojelabi confirmed that the victim survived after receiving emergency care at the Wesley Guild Hospital, but the situation took a tragic turn when Ebenezer’s father died of shock after being falsely informed that his son had died from the poisoning.

“This made the case even more tragic and complicated,” Ojelabi said. “The victim was stabilised by doctors, but his father collapsed and died after hearing wrong information.”

Chief Ajibade, who is the President of the Ijesa Sports Club, was suspended from his role after the incident came to light. The club’s Director of Social and Publicity, Kenneth Opebiyi, announced the suspension in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 7, describing the situation as “deeply troubling.”

Police said the suspect was arrested in his hometown of Ipetu Ijesa and later moved to Osogbo for further investigation and possible prosecution.

“The suspect is in custody, and investigations are ongoing,” Ojelabi stated, urging the public to remain calm and avoid jungle justice. “Justice will be served in accordance with the law,” he assured.

Chief Ajibade is expected to be charged to court once investigations are complete.
