The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that over 7.4 million Nigerians have registered online for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) within two months of the current registration exercise.
According to the figures released by the Commission, Borno State recorded the highest number of registered voters with 783,546, while Abia State came last with only 6,038 registrants.
The figures show a strong turnout in northern states, with Osun, Lagos, Kebbi, and Ogun also recording high numbers. Other states with significant registration include Kaduna (471,375), Kano (388,354), and Kogi (341,277).
In contrast, states in the South-East and South-South zones showed much lower figures. For instance, Enugu recorded 19,966, Ebonyi 12,489, Edo 11,166, and Abia the lowest with just 6,038.
The registration figures by INEC reflect early enthusiasm in some regions ahead of the 2025 general elections. The Commission is using both online pre-registration and in-person biometric capture to enroll new voters and update existing records.
INEC is urging more Nigerians, especially those in states with low turnout, to take advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) to get their PVCs and be eligible to vote.
The Commission has continued to roll out awareness campaigns, while civil society groups are also encouraging citizens to participate in the electoral process.
The current voter registration drive is part of INEC’s preparations for the 2025 general elections, where millions of Nigerians are expected to vote across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Here is the total number of registrants so far: 7,415,760.
