Tragedy struck in Dagaceri Village, Birniwa Local Government Area of Jigawa State, as a violent communal clash claimed three lives, left seven people severely injured, and resulted in the destruction of several houses.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam. He said the clash broke out when a group of suspected criminals stormed the village, attacking residents and setting their homes on fire.

According to SP Shiisu, the swift response of a combined team of security personnel helped in restoring peace in the area. Seven suspects were arrested in connection with the attack.

“Mobile phones and local charms were recovered at the scene,” he said.

The police spokesman noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the root cause of the clash and those behind the violence.

While the full details are still unfolding, the clash is believed to be linked to longstanding tensions between rival groups within the community. These types of communal conflicts are not uncommon in parts of northern Nigeria, often triggered by disputes over land, leadership, or ethnic differences.

SP Shiisu urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. He also called on communities to strengthen local security networks and make use of early warning systems to prevent further outbreaks of violence.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens. We urge people to embrace peace and report any suspicious activities to the nearest authorities,” he added.

The Jigawa State Government is yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but local sources say displaced families are currently seeking shelter with relatives in nearby villages.

Security has been tightened in Dagaceri and surrounding areas to prevent a recurrence.

As the police continue their investigations, residents and community leaders are appealing for calm and calling on the government to take urgent steps to address the root causes of such conflicts.
