Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), ending weeks of speculation about his political future.

The governor announced his decision on Saturday at the Government House in Bauchi, confirming that he would now pursue his political ambitions under the APM ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His defection comes at a time when the PDP, one of Nigeria’s major opposition parties, is facing internal crisis and leadership disputes. Political observers say the move could have far-reaching effects, especially in the North-East, where Mohammed remains a key political figure.

In recent weeks, the governor had openly criticised the PDP, describing it as “headless” due to ongoing leadership struggles. His comments raised concerns about possible divisions within the party and hinted at his willingness to explore other political platforms.

The situation worsened after a Supreme Court judgement on the PDP leadership dispute. The ruling, according to Mohammed, did not give clear control of the party to any faction, leaving the crisis unresolved.

Speaking earlier on the development, the governor said neither his group, reportedly aligned with Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), nor the faction believed to be loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, emerged as clear winners.

“We have succeeded in ensuring that no single individual hijacks the party,” Mohammed said while reacting to the judgement.

In an interview with BBC Hausa Service, he added that although the ruling helped prevent total control by one group, it did not solve the deeper problems within the party.

“As democrats who respect the rule of law, we accept the judgement. But it is not a victory for anyone,” he stated.

He explained that the PDP’s Board of Trustees would temporarily oversee the affairs of the party, in line with its constitution, until a caretaker committee is set up. However, he suggested that this arrangement may not be enough to restore stability.

Mohammed also accused Nyesom Wike of working against the PDP, alleging that the FCT minister and some of his allies have links with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). These claims reflect ongoing tensions within the opposition, as internal disagreements continue to weaken party unity.

Although Wike has not publicly responded to the latest allegations, the rivalry between different camps within the PDP has been widely reported and remains a major concern for party members.

The governor said his decision to leave the PDP was not taken lightly. According to him, the move was necessary to secure a stable political platform for himself and his supporters as preparations begin for the next election cycle.

“Our hearts remain with the PDP, but politically we must move forward,” he said during the announcement.

Mohammed also confirmed that he intends to contest the Bauchi South Senatorial District seat in the 2027 elections. This signals a shift in his political career, as he prepares to leave the governorship after completing his tenure.

Sources close to the governor said he had been consulting widely with political allies and stakeholders before making the decision to join the APM. These consultations, they say, were aimed at finding a platform that could offer stronger structure and unity.

The Allied Peoples Movement, though not as prominent as the PDP or APC, has been gradually gaining attention as an alternative platform for politicians seeking new political space. Mohammed’s defection is expected to boost the party’s visibility and influence, especially in Bauchi State and surrounding areas.

The PDP has been one of Nigeria’s dominant political parties since the return to democracy in 1999, producing several governors and presidents. However, in recent years, it has struggled with internal conflicts, leadership disputes, and electoral losses.

The ongoing crisis within the party has raised concerns about its ability to function as a strong opposition force against the ruling APC. With key figures like Bala Mohammed now leaving, questions are being asked about the party’s future direction.

For many supporters in Bauchi State, the governor’s defection marks a significant political shift. Some have expressed support for his decision, while others remain uncertain about what it means for the state’s political landscape.

As the 2027 elections approach, political alignments are expected to continue changing across the country. Parties are likely to form new alliances, while politicians reposition themselves for future contests.

For Bala Mohammed, the move to the APM represents both a new beginning and a strategic step toward his next political goal. Whether the decision will strengthen his chances in the senatorial race remains to be seen.

What is clear, however, is that the crisis within the PDP is far from over, and its impact is already reshaping Nigeria’s political space.
