The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken another major step in its preparations for the 2027 presidential election by uploading the names and particulars of its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination portal.

The development marks the formal submission of the party’s presidential ticket to the electoral commission in line with the requirements for participation in the 2027 general election.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, in a post shared on his verified X account.

According to Abdullahi, the party successfully completed the upload of the credentials and particulars of Atiku and Amaechi to the INEC portal, describing it as another milestone in the party’s preparations for the next presidential election.

“We are pleased to announce that we have successfully uploaded the names and particulars of the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar (GCON), and our Vice Presidential Candidate, Rotimi Amaechi (CON), to the nomination portal of the @INECNigeria,” he wrote.

He added that the exercise reflects the party’s determination to offer Nigerians what it described as a credible alternative in the 2027 elections.

“This marks another important step in our preparations for the 2027 general election and our commitment to offer Nigerians a credible alternative built on competence, unity, and national renewal,” Abdullahi stated.

The submission of candidates’ particulars to INEC is one of the statutory requirements political parties must fulfil before the presidential election. It allows the electoral commission to receive and verify the credentials of nominated candidates in accordance with the Electoral Act and the election timetable.

Although the upload does not conclude the nomination process, it represents an important administrative stage ahead of the commencement of campaigns and other activities leading to the polls.

Atiku emerged as the ADC’s presidential candidate after winning the party’s primary election held in May.

The former Vice President defeated former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen to secure the party’s presidential ticket.

Following the primary, Amaechi accepted his nomination as Atiku’s running mate, bringing together two experienced political figures who have held some of the highest offices in the country.

The decision was widely seen as an effort by the ADC to strengthen its chances in the 2027 presidential race by combining Atiku’s national political experience with Amaechi’s record in public service.

Atiku has remained one of Nigeria’s most prominent opposition politicians for more than two decades.

He served as Vice President between 1999 and 2007 and has contested for the presidency on several occasions under different political platforms.

Most recently, he was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 and 2023 general elections but was unsuccessful in both contests.

Following political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, Atiku joined the ADC and secured its presidential ticket after winning the party’s primary.

Amaechi also brings significant political experience to the ticket.

He served two terms as governor of Rivers State before becoming Minister of Transportation, where he supervised several major railway and transport infrastructure projects.

Before the 2023 general election, Amaechi contested for the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but lost during the party’s primary election.

He later left the ruling party and joined the ADC, where he eventually accepted the role of vice-presidential candidate after losing the party’s presidential primary to Atiku.

Political observers believe the combination of Atiku and Amaechi reflects the ADC’s strategy of presenting experienced politicians capable of mounting a serious challenge in the 2027 election.

The party has repeatedly described itself as a strong opposition platform and says it intends to provide Nigerians with an alternative to the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

ADC leaders have consistently argued that the country requires new leadership to address challenges such as inflation, unemployment, insecurity and economic growth.

The ruling APC, however, has defended the Tinubu administration’s policies, maintaining that ongoing economic reforms are necessary to stabilise the economy and lay the foundation for long-term development.

With the submission of the presidential ticket to INEC, attention is expected to shift to other stages of the electoral process, including verification of candidates’ credentials, publication of candidates’ particulars, resolution of any pre-election disputes and, eventually, the commencement of campaigns in line with the electoral timetable.

Political parties across the country have continued to intensify preparations for the 2027 elections through consultations, alliance-building and the nomination of candidates for various elective positions.

INEC has repeatedly assured Nigerians of its commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections, urging political parties to comply fully with all legal and administrative requirements.

Analysts believe that early compliance with nomination procedures gives parties enough time to address any issues that may arise before the election period.

As preparations for the 2027 general election gather momentum, the ADC says it remains focused on presenting what it describes as a platform built on competence, national unity and reform.

The successful upload of Atiku Abubakar’s and Rotimi Amaechi’s particulars to the INEC portal marks another important stage in the party’s campaign to position itself as a major contender in what is expected to be a highly competitive presidential election.
