The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old suspect, Chimaobi Mbonu, over the alleged kidnapping and murder of one George Onwurah in Ndiukwuenu village, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was arrested by officers attached to the Awgbu Divisional Headquarters on Thursday, June 12, with the help of members of the local community.
Ikenga revealed that Mbonu is a member of a kidnapping gang that abducted and tortured their victim to death in May 2024 after collecting ransom.
“Preliminary investigations showed that Chimaobi and his accomplices, who are still at large, kidnapped the victim and later killed him despite receiving ransom from his family,” the statement read.
The police also linked the gang to the vandalism and looting of the Community Health Care Centre in the area, where they reportedly stole electrical materials and other valuables.
Ikenga confirmed that the police have launched a manhunt for the other members of the gang who are currently on the run.
He assured the public that further updates would be provided as the investigation continues.
