Makurdi Catholic Diocese Back Bishop Amid Attacks, Reject Removal Rumours

The Catholic Diocese of Makurdi in Benue State has strongly defended its Bishop, Most Rev. Wilfred Anagbe, dismissing recent social media rumours calling for his removal.

In a statement released on Friday, the Makurdi Catholic Diocesan Laity Council (MCDLC), represented by Sir Njie Andrew and Mr Samuel Kunde, described the anonymous post as the work of “faceless mischief makers.” They said the aim was to weaken the bishop’s growing influence, especially as he continues to speak out on behalf of victims of violent herder attacks in the state.

The group expressed outrage, noting that the false claims were being spread at a time when Bishop Anagbe is offering strong humanitarian support to internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by killings and insecurity in Benue.

“We are outraged that at a time when Fulani terrorists are killing our people and displacing thousands, some charismatics would stoop so low to spread vile and malicious falsehoods against Bishop Anagbe. This is not just irresponsible; it is evil,” the statement said.

The Laity Council praised the bishop’s leadership, calling it prophetic, courageous, and unifying. They described him as a tireless servant of God who speaks truth to power and has brought progress to the diocese.

“The voice of Bishop Anagbe is the voice of the voiceless,” they said. “We, the Catholic faithful of Makurdi Diocese, love him and are fully united behind his leadership. There are no divisions or frictions among us.”

The group also warned politicians and others with hidden agendas not to drag the Church into political battles. They said spiritual leadership must be respected and should not be used for political gain.

The council pledged full support for Bishop Anagbe and promised to resist any further attacks on his reputation or mission, especially his work among displaced families across the diocese.
