At least three people, including a police officer and two vigilante members, were killed on Friday when gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked Babanla community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
According to eyewitnesses, the attack happened during a routine meeting of the community’s vigilante group. The attackers reportedly stormed the area, shooting randomly, and targeted the local police station, grocery shops, and a hotel.
The sudden violence forced many residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
However, the Nigerian Army responded quickly, repelled the attackers, and set up a security cordon around the area to prevent further violence.
In a statement issued by Rafiu Ajakaye, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, the Kwara State Government commended the army, police, and local vigilantes for their swift action.
The statement said Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has been in direct contact with security commanders and community leaders since the attack. He has also ordered a sustained security lockdown of the area to protect residents and track down the criminals.
This incident is the latest in a string of security challenges affecting some parts of the country, including nearby states, as local communities continue to face growing threats from armed groups.
