    Labourer Allegedly Kills 60-Year-Old Employer

    Share

A tragic incident has occurred in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State, where a 60-year-old woman, Mrs. Adelugba, was allegedly killed by a labourer she had recently hired to work on her Kolanut farm. The body of the deceased was found under mysterious circumstances, covered with leaves and palm fronds at Laje Camp, sparking concern in the community.

The labourer, who has yet to be identified, reportedly confessed to the crime and led villagers to the location where he had discarded the woman’s body. In a bizarre twist, sources close to the investigation claim that the suspect attributed his confession to a supernatural force, claiming that the ghost of the deceased pressured him to come clean about the crime.

According to sources, the deceased, Mrs. Adelugba, had hired the labourer to assist with work on her Kolanut farm. However, trouble began when she discovered that the suspect had been stealing her Kolanuts. When confronted about the theft, the labourer allegedly begged for mercy, requesting that Mrs. Adelugba not report him to the village authorities, as this could result in his expulsion from the village.

In a somewhat lenient response, Mrs. Adelugba allowed the labourer to make amends by either paying for the stolen Kolanuts or having the cost deducted from his wages. This arrangement seemed to have quelled the tension between the two, but tragically, the situation soon took a fatal turn.

The situation escalated on Saturday, when the suspect is believed to have killed Mrs. Adelugba, then fled the village. The following day, the labourer reportedly began confessing to his crime, explaining that the ghost of the murdered woman had been haunting him, compelling him to confess his actions.

In his confession, the suspect led the villagers to the spot where he had discarded Mrs. Adelugba’s body, a remote area in the Laje Camp. Upon discovering her remains, the villagers immediately contacted the authorities, and the body was subsequently taken to the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) mortuary for further examination.

Following the discovery of Mrs. Adelugba’s body, the police quickly launched an investigation into the case. The suspect, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, was apprehended and transferred to the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, for further questioning and investigation.

Although police spokesperson Funmilayo Odunlami could not be reached for an official comment, the case has attracted significant attention from both the public and local law enforcement. There are growing concerns about the safety of rural farmers who often rely on hired labourers for assistance in the fields. The incident has raised questions about trust and accountability in such working relationships.

The news of Mrs. Adelugba’s death has sent shockwaves through the local community, especially in Laje Camp, where the incident occurred. Villagers have expressed shock and disbelief at the circumstances surrounding her murder, noting that she was known as a kind and hardworking woman who had no known enemies.

Many locals have expressed concerns about the growing rate of violent crimes in the area, particularly crimes involving hired labourers and the theft of farm produce. In a region where agriculture plays a vital role in the livelihood of many, incidents like this one have left the farming community feeling vulnerable.

The labourer’s claim that the ghost of Mrs. Adelugba pressured him into confessing has added an eerie element to the case. While some may view this as a desperate attempt to justify his actions, it also reflects the strong belief in supernatural forces that still exists in many rural communities in Nigeria.

In the wake of the confession, some villagers have begun to speculate that the woman’s spirit might have indeed had a role in forcing the labourer to come forward, while others suggest that his guilt over the crime led him to fabricate the supernatural claim. Regardless of the reason, the focus remains on the crime itself and the investigation into the suspect’s actions.

This tragic event underscores a larger, ongoing issue in rural Nigerian communities: farm theft. Kolanut farms, like many other agricultural ventures, are often targets for theft due to the valuable nature of the produce and the relatively low level of security in these rural areas.

Farmers like Mrs. Adelugba, who rely on hired labour for farm work, are at particular risk, as they may have little control over the actions of the people they employ. The incident has sparked calls for greater vigilance and accountability, as well as for improved security measures in rural areas to protect farmers and their livelihoods.

As the investigation continues, many are hoping that justice will be served for Mrs. Adelugba. The case highlights the dangers of unchecked power and the need for greater regulation and oversight in rural labour practices. The murder of an innocent woman, allegedly over a dispute about stolen Kolanuts, has left the community grieving and calling for accountability.
