Popular Nigerian activist Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), was arrested on Friday at a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) branch in Abuja.
According to his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, the arrest happened while VDM was at the bank with his mother to complain about what they described as unauthorised deductions from her bank account. VDM alleged that his mother was being debited repeatedly for a loan she never took.
Adeyanju, who confirmed the incident in a Facebook post, described the arrest as “absolutely unacceptable,” insisting that “demanding accountability is not a crime.” He added that the activist’s friend, identified as C Park, was also taken by the police, but VDM’s mother was not arrested.
As of the time of this report, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has not officially commented on the incident.
VeryDarkMan is known for using social media to speak out on issues of injustice and corruption in Nigeria.
