Oyetola: No Life-Jackets, No Boat Movement

    Share

The Federal Government has stepped up efforts to improve safety on Nigerian waterways. Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, has warned boat operators and passengers against traveling without life jackets. This warning comes after the distribution of 3,500 life jackets in Bayelsa State on Friday as part of a nationwide initiative.

The government is distributing a total of 42,000 life jackets across the country to reduce the number of boat accidents and ensure the safety of passengers, especially in coastal and riverine communities. Oyetola emphasized that water transport plays a crucial role in the daily lives of many Nigerians, and the life jacket distribution aims to protect users, including fishermen, traders, and transport operators.

“These life jackets are for protection, not decoration. Safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Oyetola stated, urging boat users to comply with safety rules. He also called on water marshals to enforce the rule: no life jackets, no movement.

In addition to the safety campaign, Oyetola praised the Bayelsa State Government for its establishment of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and its efforts to develop the Agge Deep Seaport. He described the seaport project as a transformative development that will enhance trade, create jobs, and boost economic growth in the Niger Delta region.

With a focus on safety and infrastructure development, the Federal Government remains committed to improving the marine environment and ensuring the safety of all waterway users in the country.
