The Nigerian Senate has set up an 18-member committee to oversee the activities of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), the Sole Administrator of Rivers State.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement on Tuesday during the resumption of plenary. He said the move was aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and legislative oversight in the administration of Rivers State.
The committee will be chaired by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and includes several prominent lawmakers such as Adams Oshiomhole, Simon Lalong, Ireti Kingibe, and Sani Musa. The Clerk of the Senate will also serve as a member.
Akpabio emphasized the urgency of the committee’s work and directed members to begin their duties immediately. He also noted that the committee’s composition could be adjusted after further consultations.
The appointment of a sole administrator in Rivers State followed a period of political tension and disputes over leadership. With this oversight committee, the Senate aims to ensure that the state is governed within the bounds of the law and democratic norms.
The Senate President reaffirmed the upper chamber’s dedication to supporting peace and proper governance in Rivers State during the ongoing political transition.
