Ohanaeze Warns: Southeast Governors Will Be Blamed If Terror Hits Igboland

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading Igbo socio-cultural group, has issued a strong warning to governors in the Southeast, saying they will be held responsible if armed attacks similar to the recent Benue massacre happen in any part of Igboland.

The group raised alarm over what it called the dangerous infiltration of the Southeast by armed Fulani militias and suspected terrorists. According to Ohanaeze, there are growing reports of these groups moving into the region from Benue and Kogi states, especially at night and without challenge.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze said that the situation is dire and called on Southeast leaders to act immediately.

“Governors must wake up and stop pretending all is well. If these attackers strike, they will bear full responsibility,” Isiguzoro said.

Residents in Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi have reported seeing strange movements in nearby forests, raising serious concerns about security. Ohanaeze said that communities are feeling unsafe and warned that if government at all levels continues to ignore the warning signs, the consequences could be deadly.

The group called for the urgent creation of armed vigilante groups in all 95 local government areas of the Southeast, saying the people can no longer depend solely on government security forces.

“Any governor who fails to protect their people will be held accountable — at the polls and in the court of public opinion,” the statement warned.

Ohanaeze urged the Igbo population to stay alert and organize community defense groups to stop any threat before it strikes. The message was clear: “Self-defense is no longer optional — it is necessary for survival.”
