Fresh violence broke out on Saturday between two neighbouring communities in Benue State, leading to the burning of houses and destruction of property.
The clash occurred between residents of Mbaiase in Gwer East Local Government Area and Igbinde village in Konshisha Local Government Area. According to security sources, the trouble started around 9:30 a.m. when suspected armed youths from Mbaiase reportedly attacked Igbinde, located in the Mbagusa/Mbatser Council Ward of Konshisha.
Several thatched houses were set on fire and properties destroyed during the attack. However, no loss of life has been confirmed at the time of reporting.
The crisis prompted a swift response from troops of Operation Whirl Stroke and other security forces, who were deployed to the scene to prevent further violence and restore calm.
Sources say the clash is rooted in long-standing land and boundary disputes between the two communities, which have led to recurring tensions over the years.
In the aftermath of the incident, local leaders—including traditional rulers and chairmen from both Gwer East and Konshisha LGAs—have started peace talks to address the root causes of the conflict and find a permanent solution.
Security patrols have also been intensified in the affected areas to prevent possible revenge attacks and reassure residents.
Communal conflicts have remained a challenge in some parts of Benue State, often linked to disputes over land, farming rights, and local boundaries. Authorities have urged communities to embrace dialogue and avoid violence.
