Liverpool and Portugal forward, Diogo Jota, has died in a car accident in Spain at the age of 28.
According to reports, the tragic incident happened on the A-52 highway in Zamora province, Spain. Jota was travelling with his brother, Andre, when their car veered off the road. No other vehicle was involved in the crash.
Jota’s death comes just two weeks after he got married to his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, in a private ceremony in Porto, Portugal.
The Spanish police have confirmed the accident and said investigations are ongoing to determine what led to the crash.
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and made 182 appearances for the club. He was part of the Liverpool squad that won the Premier League title in May under new manager Arne Slot. He also lifted the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups during his time at Anfield.
Internationally, Jota played 49 times for Portugal, scoring 14 goals. He helped his country win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and again last month.
