The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigeria’s South-South region has adopted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its sole presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
This was announced during the APC South-South stakeholders meeting held on Saturday in Benin City, Edo State, with the theme “Renewed Hope in Action: Strengthening APC Mobilization and Governance in the South-South.”
The meeting was attended by top party leaders, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, APC governors from the region, ministers, federal lawmakers, and heads of agencies.
In a communique read by APC National Vice Chairman (South-South), Victor Giadom, the party said Tinubu’s adoption was based on his achievements so far, especially in infrastructural development and his “Renewed Hope” agenda, which they say is benefiting the region.
The party also adopted its four sitting governors in the South-South as sole candidates for second-term bids. They include the governors of Edo, Cross River, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States.
The motion for the adoption was moved by House of Reps Leader, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, and seconded by Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
In his welcome speech, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, called on non-APC governors in the region, particularly Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, to join the APC for the sake of regional unity and development.
The Acting National Chairman of the APC, Ali Bukar Dalori, assured that the party has no intention of creating a one-party state but maintained there is “no vacancy in Aso Rock” in 2027.
Senate President Akpabio also urged unity within the region, stating that the South-South “lays the golden egg” and must take charge of its political future. He added that more governors in the region are likely to join the APC soon.
The meeting came days after the APC governors under the Progressive Governors Forum held a two-day strategy session in Benin City, also hosted by Governor Okpebholo.
